Topic: Prednisone Alternatives for Allergies
Post by SunShine789 (02/15/22 10:34 AM)
Hi everyone! I've been dealing with severe allergies and my doctor prescribed me prednisone. While it works, I feel a bit worried about the side effects. Are there any other medications or natural remedies that can help manage allergies? Thanks!

Hello SunShine789! It's great to hear you’re looking for alternatives. Prednisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug, but it does have side effects if used long-term. Here are some options:
- Antihistamines: Over-the-counter drugs like Claritin or Zyrtec can help with sneezing and itching.
- Nasal Corticosteroids: Sprays like Flonase can reduce nasal inflammation without the systemic effects of prednisone.
- Decongestants: Sudafed is a common one that helps relieve congestion, but it shouldn't be used for more than three days.
For natural remedies:- Neti Pots and Saline Nasal Sprays: These help flush out allergens and reduce swelling in the nasal passages.- Butterbur Extract: A natural antihistamine; however, you should check with your doctor first to ensure it's safe for you.- Probiotics: Some studies suggest probiotics can boost immune function and may help alleviate allergy symptoms.
Do any of these sound like they might work for you?

Hi DrMedic8, thank you so much! I think I’ll try the nasal corticosteroids and perhaps add some probiotics. Do you think these will work as well as prednisone for severe allergies? Also, how long should I give it before seeing results?

You’re welcome, SunShine789! Nasal corticosteroids are generally very effective and can be used as a first-line treatment for nasal allergies. They work by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages.
- Nasal Corticosteroids: Start with one spray per nostril once daily. It usually takes about 12 hours to start working, but you might not see peak results until after 1-2 weeks of consistent use.
- Probiotics: There isn’t a specific time frame for seeing results, as it can vary from person to person. Some people report feeling better within days, while others may notice changes over several months.
If these options don’t provide sufficient relief, we might consider other treatments like immunotherapy (allergy shots). It's important to monitor your symptoms and how you’re responding to the new treatment. If things aren't improving or if they get worse, it’s a good idea to follow up with your doctor.
Feel free to ask more questions if you have them!

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I’ll start on the nasal corticosteroids and probiotics. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll definitely talk to my doctor about other options.
