Forum Topic: Prednisone Dosage for Dogs - Advice Needed

PawProtector

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with my dog's allergies for quite some time now. The vet prescribed prednisone but I'm a bit worried about the dosage. My dog is a 25 lb mixed breed and the dose seems high to me. Can anyone give advice on what would be considered safe?

DrVetOnDuty

Hello, PawProtector! Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It's important to approach prednisone dosages carefully. For a 25 lb dog, the typical starting dosage is around 0.5 mg/lb, given every 12-24 hours depending on the severity of the condition and how quickly it needs to be controlled.

Can you share more details about what your vet prescribed? It would also help if we knew the specific symptoms and duration for which your dog has been taking prednisone.

PawProtector

Thanks, DrVetOnDuty! The prescription is 10 mg of prednisone twice a day. My dog has had chronic skin issues, including redness, itching, and hot spots, for about two months now. I'm just worried because she seems so small compared to the dosage.

DrVetOnDuty

That's a reasonable concern, PawProtector. The 10 mg twice daily would mean your dog is getting around 4 mg per pound (10 mg divided by 25 lbs). This does seem on the higher side for long-term use but may be necessary to control severe allergies or inflammation.

It’s crucial that you monitor any potential side effects, such as increased thirst and urination, changes in appetite, lethargy, or behavioral changes. If these occur, it would be wise to contact your vet to reassess the dosage.

For chronic conditions, vets sometimes start with a higher dose for initial control then gradually taper down once symptoms improve. Have you discussed this possibility with your vet?

PawProtector

Thank you so much, DrVetOnDuty! I haven't had that conversation yet. It makes sense to try and taper the dosage over time if it’s under control. I’ll reach out to my vet tomorrow about adjusting the dose.

I really appreciate your help. Do any of you have experiences with prednisone in dogs? How did it work for your pets?

DogLover4Life

Hi there! My dog has also had chronic skin allergies and we used prednisone as well. We started at a higher dosage but then worked with our vet to reduce it significantly over time.

It's important to be patient because reducing the dose too quickly can cause a flare-up of symptoms. Our vet recommended monitoring closely for signs that the reduced dose was still effective in managing the allergies.

Also, make sure your dog is on a good diet and consider adding supplements like omega-3 fatty acids which can help improve skin health naturally.

PawProtector

Thanks for sharing your experience, DogLover4Life! That gives me some hope. I'll definitely look into dietary changes too.

DrVetOnDuty, do you have any additional tips or precautions to keep in mind when using prednisone long-term?

DrVetOnDuty

Absolutely, PawProtector. Long-term use of prednisone can lead to some health concerns such as increased risk of infections, suppression of the immune system, and potential issues with adrenal gland function.

Here are a few tips:1. Regular Monitoring: Schedule regular check-ups with your vet to monitor for any side effects.2. Diet Management: As DogLover4Life mentioned, a balanced diet rich in omega-3s can be beneficial.3. Gradual Dose Reduction: Work closely with your vet on reducing the dosage gradually if it’s under control.4. Avoid Sudden Discontinuation: Never stop the medication abruptly as this could cause severe withdrawal symptoms.

If you notice any changes or worsening of symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

PawProtector

Thanks so much for all the advice! I’ll make sure to keep a close eye on my dog and follow up with our vet soon. Feeling more confident now!
