Forum Topic: Propecia Dosage Discussion (1mg vs. 5mg)
Post by: BaldingBiker
Hey everyone,
I've been struggling with hair loss for quite some time and recently heard about Propecia. My dermatologist suggested I try it out, but he's considering two different dosages - 1mg and 5mg. Which one should I go for? What are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks,BaldingBiker

Hey BaldingBiker,
Great question! Propecia is a popular treatment for male pattern baldness, but choosing between 1mg and 5mg can be confusing.
The standard dosage of Propecia (finasteride) used in the US and Europe is 1mg. It's effective at slowing hair loss and promoting regrowth in many men. The 1mg dose has been extensively studied and proven to work well, with minimal side effects compared to higher doses.
However, some doctors may prescribe a 5mg dose if they feel that a stronger approach is needed based on your specific condition or response to the medication. This dosage can be more effective in some cases but might also come with an increased risk of side effects like decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.
I'd suggest starting with the 1mg dose first, as it has a better safety profile overall. If you don't see satisfactory results after several months, discuss going up to 5mg with your dermatologist.
Hope this helps!ScalpSavior

Hi BaldingBiker,
I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago. My doc started me on Propecia at 1mg, and I've been using it ever since. It's been fantastic for slowing down my hair loss.
The thing about Propecia is that it takes time to work its magic – usually around three months before you start noticing any changes. So, patience is key here!
As ScalpSavior mentioned, starting with 1mg is a good idea because it's the clinically tested and approved dose for most men. If after six months or so you don't see much improvement and your doc feels that stepping up to 5mg might be necessary, then go from there.
One thing I'd also recommend is keeping an eye on your general health while taking Propecia, as some people can experience side effects like fatigue or mood changes. Make sure to follow up with your doctor regularly to monitor progress.
Good luck and stay positive!TousledToupee

Hey there,
I'm another guy who's been on Propecia for a while, initially started at 1mg. It definitely helped me stabilize my hair loss and even regrow some strands in the past couple of years.
If you're considering going to 5mg, it’s worth knowing that this dosage is less commonly prescribed and hasn't had as much research done on its long-term effects compared to the 1mg dose. The higher dose might have a stronger impact, but it comes with more potential side effects which can be quite bothersome for some men.
It's also important to understand that Propecia isn't magic; results vary from person to person. Some may see significant regrowth, while others might just halt their hair loss progression. Patience and consistency are crucial!
Consult your dermatologist about the pros and cons of each dosage based on your specific condition. They can help you make an informed decision.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I really appreciate it. I think I'll start with the 1mg dose as suggested and see how things go from there. If needed, I can always revisit the option of stepping up to 5mg.
Fingers crossed this works out!
Cheers,BaldingBiker
