Forum Topic: Using Doxycycline for Dogs - Dosage and Side Effects
User1 (Paws4Ever)
Hey everyone,
I've been prescribed doxycycline for my dog Max. He's got a bad case of Lyme disease, and our vet recommended this antibiotic to help him out. I just wanted some advice on dosage and any side effects we should watch out for.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Paws4Ever,
Doxycycline is commonly used for treating infections like Lyme disease in dogs, so you're on the right track! The usual dose ranges from 5 to 10 mg per pound of body weight daily. It's typically split into two doses given 12 hours apart.
For example, if Max weighs about 40 lbs, he would likely get a total of around 200-400 mg per day (100-200 mg twice a day). Always follow the specific dosage your vet has prescribed as it can vary based on individual cases and conditions.

Hey Paws4Ever,
My dog was on doxycycline too! It’s important to give it with food, preferably something that isn't very high in calcium. Calcium can interfere with the absorption of the drug, so a balanced meal or treat will do just fine.

Thanks VetDoc101 and DogLover78!
That's really helpful info! I'll make sure Max gets his medication with some of his regular kibble.
VetDoc101, what are the potential side effects we should watch for? Is it common for dogs to have any adverse reactions?
User2 (VetDoc101)
Great question, Paws4Ever! Common side effects include stomach upset like vomiting or diarrhea, which can be reduced by giving the medication with food. Some dogs might develop sensitivity to sunlight, so try to keep Max out of direct sunlight during treatment.
Rarely, doxycycline can cause kidney damage if used for a long time or at high doses. If your dog shows any signs like increased thirst and urination, lethargy, or loss of appetite, it’s important to contact your vet right away.

I had my pup on doxycycline too and she did well with it. I found that giving her the medication with a small piece of cheese helped mask any bad taste and made her more willing to take it.
Also, remember to finish the full course of antibiotics unless otherwise advised by your vet. Stopping early can lead to incomplete treatment and possible relapse.

Hi Paws4Ever,
Don't forget that doxycycline can also affect gut flora, so you might want to consider giving Max a probiotic supplement during the course of antibiotics. This helps maintain healthy digestion and can reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset.

Wow, thanks everyone for all this information! I'll make sure to keep an eye on Max and watch out for any potential side effects. It's really comforting to know that others have had success with doxycycline too!
VetDoc101, if you could recommend a probiotic brand, it would be fantastic!

You're welcome, Paws4Ever! As for probiotics, something like FortiFlora or Prozyme is usually well-received by dogs and can help with digestion. However, always consult your vet before starting any new supplement to ensure it's the right fit for Max.
Keep an eye on his condition and make sure he completes the full course of treatment as prescribed. If you notice anything out of the ordinary or if he seems uncomfortable, don't hesitate to reach out to your vet again.
Good luck with Max’s recovery!

Thanks so much VetDoc101! I'll definitely look into FortiFlora and talk it over with my vet.
To everyone else, thanks for the tips and support. It's great to be part of such a helpful community.
Keep those paws wagging!
Hope this helps, Paws4Ever!
